The standards of the Pearl Institute are actually quite strict. For example, we submitted 15 strands for certification, and only 8 were identified as 'Hanadama.' Among these, we had to swap out pearls 2–3 times before finally obtaining the certificates. Only when a strand achieves first-grade ratings in all five aspects—nacre thickness, shape, luster, color, and uniformity—can it be certified as Hanadama.

The Pearl Institute Co. Ltd was founded in 1998. The founder, who specialized in aquaculture, previously worked at Mikimoto and Tokyo Pearl. Drawing on years of industry experience, he established a rigorous and scientific pearl evaluation system, with particular emphasis on the quality of the nacre coating.

The Pearl Comprehensive Research Institute advocates for a comprehensive assessment of the quality of nacre crystallization—such as density and smoothness—rather than relying solely on thickness measurements to determine the quality of a pearl.

In general, an Akoya pearl with a nacre thickness of 0.4 mm may consist of several hundred to several thousand layers of calcium carbonate crystals. Thickness measurement only reflects the total thickness of these calcium carbonate crystal layers. When an Akoya pearl is cut open for observation, some pearls with thicker individual crystal layers—and therefore a thicker overall nacre layer—do not always achieve the expected level of luster.
