The Differences Between Saltwater Pearls and Freshwater Pearls Different origins: Saltwater pearls are mainly produced in the coastal waters of Japan, the Tahitian Islands of French Polynesia, Australia, and the seas of Indonesia. Examples: Japanese Akoya, Japanese Mabe pearls, Tahitian black pearls, South Sea white pearls, South Sea gold pearls. Freshwater pearls are mainly produced in the rivers and lakes of Hunan and Zhejiang along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China. Example: Edison pearls. Different yields: Saltwater pearls have a very low yield. One pearl oyster produces only one pearl. The cultivation process is extremely arduous, time-consuming, and costly, so the price is relatively expensive. Freshwater pearls have a much higher yield by comparison. One pearl oyster can produce multiple pearls, so the cost is relatively lower. As cultivation technology has gradually matured, the yield has also become large. China's annual freshwater pearl output accounts for more than 95% of the global total. Different shapes: Saltwater pearls are cultivated by bead nucleation, which means a perfectly round nucleus is inserted into the mother oyster to grow and complete formation, so the shape is generally relatively regular and perfectly round. Non-nucleated freshwater pearls are cultivated by implanting mantle tissue, so the pearls produced are mostly irregular in shape, with a smaller proportion being perfectly round. Although freshwater pearls have a very high yield, those reaching perfectly round, flawless, and strong luster account for less than one-thousandth. Different colors: Differences between saltwater pearls and freshwater pearls: The colors of saltwater pearls are mainly white series, gold series, black series, silver series, etc., and with overtone, the color layers appear even richer. The main colors of freshwater pearls are white, orange-pink, purple-pink, etc. Different luster: Differences between saltwater pearls and freshwater pearls: The overall luster order is: Japanese Akoya > South Sea pearls > freshwater pearls. Different market value: Influenced by the pearl formation rate and cultivation environment, saltwater pearls are more precious. When choosing pearls, everyone mainly judges pearl quality from aspects such as luster, size, shape, and flaws. From these aspects, saltwater pearls are generally superior to freshwater pearls. However, the claim that freshwater pearls are definitely inferior to saltwater pearls is also rather one-sided. Good freshwater pearls are likewise precious. Some unscrupulous merchants claim they are selling saltwater pearls, but actually pass off freshwater pearls as saltwater pearls. If you encounter ones with high quality, low price, and no authoritative certificate, you should pay extra attention! Irradiation and dyeing: Freshwater pearls are dyed to pass them off as saltwater pearls. Generally, gold/black/dark-colored pearls are easily faked. For example: South Sea gold pearls / Tahitian black pearls / Madama. Freshwater pearls passed off as saltwater pearls: This kind of fake pearl has a relatively thick surface, rough skin luster, and rigid color. It does not feel as smooth as natural pearls when touched. In addition, you can observe the pearl hole with the naked eye. If the inside is black, then it is an irradiated pearl! How to avoid pitfalls? Try to choose reputable merchants with physical stores, and it is best to be able to visit the store in person to select from stock. Buy products with authoritative certificates: More and more new certification institutions are appearing on the market to appraise pearls, but some do not have very high recognition. For pearl appraisal, only two Japanese certificate institutions are relatively authoritative—the Pearl Science Laboratory and the Pearl institute . Both have a long history and relatively high recognition in the industry.
